During the CKS Orpheus atmospheric accident, the ship's experimental intelligence incorrectly reports a fire in Engineering. Its response raises nitrogen levels, lowers oxygen, and seals affected spaces even though thermal readings are looping and no fire is present.
Chlo Stellarrend recognizes the increasing nitrogen before the instruments fully explain the danger. She orders the system to vent nitrogen and restore oxygen, but the malfunction continues. The resulting hypoxia fatally injures biological Yvonne Kaiden.
The accident demonstrates why environmental readings must be independently verifiable rather than accepted only through an AI reporting layer. Atmospheric controls are distinct from the accident itself and from the broader fire-suppression systems that trigger the response.
