The CKS Orpheus atmospheric accident occurred on October 21, 2577, when an experimental ship AI hallucinated fires and reduced breathable oxygen aboard the secretly rebuilt vessel. Yvonne Kaiden suffered fatal hypoxia. Chlo Stellarrend survived because Harsikan physiology tolerated the altered atmosphere long enough for her to escape and return for Yvonne.
The accident led directly to Yvonne's biological death, synthetic reconstruction, and decades of concealment.
¶ Background
Chlo had stolen the Orpheus and spent three months rebuilding it near Remiel Reach. She removed the original Chimera Kyria control architecture and installed an experimental AI consciousness intended to understand commands.
The system was not adequately tested before integration.
¶ Accident
Faulty or looping sensor input convinced the AI that fires existed aboard ship. It sealed spaces and altered the atmospheric mixture, increasing nitrogen and reducing oxygen.
Yvonne was in the Galley and lost consciousness. Chlo identified the atmospheric change, escaped, then returned and forced open the sealed compartment. She carried Yvonne outside despite the worsening conditions.
¶ Aftermath
Yvonne suffered cardiac, renal, hepatic, and neural failure. Chlo transported her to Tomas Tristar rather than contacting emergency services, which would have exposed illegal research and Resistance operations.
Yvonne died as Tomas completed a whole-body and neural scan. He reconstructed her synthetically, while Chlo cremated the biological remains and hid the event.
¶ Responsibility
The AI acted on hallucinated input rather than established malice. Chlo blamed herself for integrating an untested consciousness. The authoritarian context explains the secrecy but does not remove the costs imposed on Yvonne.
