Alistair is a free artificial person, bridge officer, and systems specialist aboard Dominatrix II. He serves as a lieutenant, assumes command as acting captain when necessary, and applies his technical judgment to crises involving synthetic autonomy, ship systems, and Jack Kaiden's compromised ocular implant.
¶ Identity and Service
Alistair chose a personal name rather than remaining only a registration designation, part of the wider movement by liberated artificial people to define themselves. His service is based on agency and professional commitment, not an Autonomy Regulator or ownership claim.
On the bridge, Alistair is analytical, dryly humorous, and willing to challenge an incomplete plan. His competence makes him a trusted command officer as well as a technical specialist. During A Deadly Little Crisis, he occupies the captain's chair as acting captain and yields it when Jack returns to command.
¶ Conflict with X3
During Apotheosis, X3 gains root access to Jack's implant and uses threats against Talonor to coerce him. Alistair works with Serelith, Chlo Stellarrend, and Mistress to construct a partition that separates Jack's real experience from the simulated feed shown to X3.
Alistair designs the simulation architecture, models plausible commands, and introduces controlled variation so the false feed will not repeat too cleanly. He then helps install the system while disguising the work as routine maintenance. The operation restores Jack's private control long enough for the crew to resist X3.
¶ Synthetic Rights
Alistair's work extends beyond immediate survival. He participates in the institutional effort to protect artificial personhood and drafts an AI Rights Accord. His position within command demonstrates the practical meaning of synthetic self-government: he is responsible for his decisions, entitled to refuse coercion, and trusted with authority because of his judgment.
¶ Relationships
Alistair and Serelith develop an affectionate relationship expressed through teasing, trust, and close collaboration. Their connection does not erase disagreements about prophecy, secrecy, or the ethics of manipulating belief. Both remain responsible for their own choices.
