Frosnik “Krampus” Volzen is an Eisgait raider and the father of Branel Volzen. He steals supplies because his community believes raiding is necessary to survive the winter, but his desire to provide for Branel forces him to confront what that survival costs other families.
¶ A Deadly Little Crisis
Frosnik returns to the raider encampment with a stolen Holographic Entertainment Arts Device as a Christmas gift. The device cannot be used without its password, and Branel rejects it after realizing that it was stolen. His son's disappointment leaves Frosnik caught between fatherhood and the expectations of the raiders.
Cookie encourages him, but Branel asks for something more difficult than a replacement gift: an apology to the colonists and a promise not to raid again. Frosnik cannot immediately make that promise. He and Branel later watch the stolen supplies returned, and an anonymous Christmas visit gives Branel gifts without requiring another family to lose theirs.
Frosnik's story does not erase his responsibility for raiding. It presents him as a desperate father capable of love while still participating in a system that harms other desperate people.
