Cookie is a raider and acquaintance of Frosnik Volzen. He walks with crutches after losing a foot and wears the orange pelt of a Jasger dire wolf.
Cookie shares the raiders' harsh belief that survival depends on taking whatever food, valuables, or liquor a person can carry. When Frosnik worries that his son Branel Volzen rejected a stolen gift, Cookie argues that children see only the theft rather than the danger their parents faced to obtain it. He expects Branel eventually to accept the same worldview because nobody will simply provide what the raiders need.
Cookie's advice reinforces the culture Frosnik is beginning to question: deprivation is treated as justification for raiding, while the people harmed by those raids disappear from the moral calculation.
Cookie is killed by plasma fire during the assault on the raider settlement. Frosnik sees his charred body while deciding whether to continue fighting or surrender for Branel's sake.
