A shadow rift is a temporary passage through fractured spacetime opened by a ghost drive. The rift creates a subspace stream that allows a vessel to travel faster than light.
From outside, its opening resembles reality cracking into a kaleidoscope of shards around a vortex. Ships enter, navigate the subspace route, and later emerge into normal space. A ghost drive pushed to its limit can make the journey between Earth and The Sphere in approximately two months.
Shadow rifts are travel phenomena rather than permanent settlements. They can nevertheless be navigated, intercepted, enlarged, or used as escape routes. Later wormhole systems still open a conventional shadow rift as part of their operation before applying a different form of transit.
