A data spike is a compact removable storage and transfer device. It can plug into a HoloConsole or a compatible bodily implant.
Jack Kaiden discovers a spike-sized sensor hidden inside the cap of a medicine bottle and inserts it into the access slot of his ocular implant. Pailisto later uses another data spike to load a one-terabyte file into a HoloConsole while demonstrating information about The Sphere.
The term describes the physical data carrier and connector, not the information stored on it.
