Valen Moonspire is the combat engineer who serves in Rift Vanguard Six before John Kaiden. Valen is killed during an active mission, leaving a vacancy the squad has little time to mourn during the continuing war.
John joins the SSS Roc as Valen's replacement. Although John has the required engineering role, the squad initially watches him closely because filling Valen's position does not automatically earn the trust built with the person who died.
