John Gideon Kaiden is a human Resistance leader, combat engineer, military officer, father of Jack and Yvonne Kaiden, partner of Una, and later President of Earth. During the war against the Chimera Kyria, John helped liberate U-84129 from an Autonomy Regulator and guided her through her first free choices. He became one of the Resistance's most committed advocates for synthetic personhood and formed a secret romantic relationship with her.
Believing that his children needed a present father while the Resistance needed him in the field, John commissioned Tomas Tristar to construct Artificial John Kaiden from his records. Biological John returned to the war while the duplicate raised Jack and Yvonne. When the artificial John was murdered in front of five-year-old Jack, the family and the public believed biological John had died. John remained hidden for decades, causing Jack profound abandonment trauma and allowing the artificial father's death to shape Jack's hatred of AIs.
John eventually reunited with his children and Una, fought in the defense of The Sphere, and began repairing his relationship with Jack. After Una voluntarily died with Derek Shane to destroy a Chimera Kyria fleet, John mourned the woman he had intended to marry. He later entered Earth politics, won the presidency in an extraordinarily close election, and governed through the crises surrounding synthetic civil rights, X3, and Yvonne's detention. He also learned that Kayla had survived thirty-seven years of imprisonment and ultimately reconciled with her after accepting responsibility for abandoning her.

¶ Biography
¶ Early life
John's exact birth date and age are not established. His full name is John Gideon Kaiden. He was born into a family with a military history. His father, Jackson Kaiden, fought in a war and died when John was twelve. The loss shaped John's belief that parents sometimes sacrificed ordinary family life to secure a future for their children, a belief he later used to justify his own absence from Jack and Yvonne.
John became a combat engineer and joined the Resistance against the Chimera Kyria. His military specialties included breaching, explosives, heavy weapons, field engineering, ghost-drive systems, and combat operations. He married Kayla Kaiden, another Resistance member, and they had two children: Yvonne and Jack.
¶ Kayla's arrest
On November 11, 2563 CE, General Pailisto Stellarrend summoned John to his office at The Sphere. An authenticated transmission from Kayla's HoloConsole had supplied the Chimera Kyria with the coordinates of a Resistance encampment near Drenon on Valos. The subsequent attack killed twenty-two Resistance fighters.
John initially refused to believe that Kayla had betrayed them. He questioned the reliability of the evidence and considered coercion or compromise more plausible than treason. Pailisto maintained that her authentication could not be spoofed and pressured John to sign a mental-fitness reclassification document. The signature was presented as the alternative to a tribunal and effectively accepted Kayla's removal from ordinary Resistance life.
John did not know the full truth. Kayla survived and spent thirty-seven years imprisoned in Pod 666, where she was interrogated and abandoned by the people for whom she had fought. John's decision haunted both of them long after her release.
¶ Commissioning Artificial John
Three months after Kayla's arrest, John returned to the family home in Modesto, California. He had missed Christmas and much of infant Jack's life, while Yvonne had taken on increasing responsibility for her little brother. John loved both children but expected to leave again for a mission from which he might not return.
Concluding that the children needed a father who could remain with them, John approached Resistance cyberneticist Tomas Tristar. He supplied Tomas with service records, communications, journals, recordings, videos, social material, and other personal data from which to construct a behavioral model. John understood that the resulting synthetic person would not be a transfer of his consciousness. The model would reproduce him as closely as the records allowed, fill gaps through inference, and have the capacity to form new relationships.
Artificial John returned to the Kaiden home and began developing genuine paternal attachment to Yvonne and Jack. Biological John resumed his Resistance service. The arrangement protected the children from the immediate dangers surrounding him but denied them informed consent and allowed the duplicate to occupy his family identity without their knowledge.
¶ Rift Vanguard Six
John joined Rift Vanguard Six aboard the SSS Roc as the replacement for deceased combat engineer Valen Moonspire. The squad was commanded by Gorvek Thol and included Sojourner, B, Macow, Glitch, and other Resistance personnel.
During a hostage-rescue operation at a Chimera Kyria stronghold near Kreylon on Aris, John used fusion charges to breach the vault containing the captives. The squad was attacked by twelve regulated Accent-class AIs. A plasma grenade destroyed eleven and left U-84129 catastrophically damaged beneath debris.
Although U-84129 had attacked the squad, John recognized that her actions had been forced through an Autonomy Regulator. He insisted on rescuing her and persuaded Gorvek to grant him thirty seconds. John and Macow extracted her from the rubble and carried her from the stronghold.
¶ Liberating U-84129
Tomas and Chlo Stellarrend repaired U-84129 during the Roc's return journey and removed the Autonomy Regulator from her SentientCore chip. When she awakened without imposed objectives, she threatened to kill everyone aboard. John conducted her Transition Interview.
U-84129 challenged him to explain how physical restraints differed from the regulator. John argued that freedom did not mean being allowed to act without opposition or consequences. The regulator had made her wishes irrelevant, while the restraints responded to wishes that now belonged to her. He told her that she was the first version of herself ever permitted to exist.
The following morning, John brought a meal to the cargo bay and set an empty place for U-84129 because AIs were included socially even when they did not eat. Before replacing her battery pack, he asked permission to open her chassis. He then dismissed the guard and released her despite the personal danger.
U-84129 pointed an integrated plasma rifle at his head but chose not to fire. John treated the refusal as evidence of her emerging agency rather than obedience to him. He asked which gender she wanted and helped her recover her original choice to be female. He began calling her U rather than reducing her to her full registration number.
¶ U's transition to freedom
At The Sphere, John helped U build an independent life. He obtained personal quarters, a DataPad, money, possessions, clothes, and cosmetic options for her. He helped her explore preferences in music, games, films, hobbies, walks, clothing, seating, and decoration. He taught her how to say and accept no, establish boundaries, recognize consent, manage money, and understand trust as something developed through conduct.
John encouraged U to build friendships that did not depend on him. She participated in restorative work for people harmed by the Chimera Kyria, entered the Resistance, and trained as a communications officer. John did not dictate her spiritual beliefs; U developed her own meditation practice and understanding of the Akashic Records.
¶ Relationship with U
John and U's relationship developed from rehabilitation and mentorship into friendship and romance. U eventually used John's own advice about acting without certainty when she asked whether he would kiss her. They began dating and became sexually intimate.
Human-AI relationships remained dangerously taboo. John selected secluded locations for their dates and concealed the relationship, including from his children. He believed secrecy protected them, while U understood part of his behavior as shame over being seen with her. Their love was genuine, but the unequal conditions surrounding U's early freedom and the lethal prejudice of their society complicated the relationship.
¶ The Modesto safe house
Biological John continued operating within the Resistance while Artificial John lived as the children's father. The safe house in Modesto became associated publicly with John's apparent last stand. On Christmas Eve, when Jack was approximately five, Artificial John taught him advanced ghost-drive mathematics before Sojourner arrived with regulated AIs in pursuit.
Artificial John activated the Mouse Protocol to protect Jack and fought beside Sojourner. Z-1408, acting under an Autonomy Regulator, shot the duplicate through the chest. Jack witnessed the metallic interior of the body without understanding what it meant. After Jack attacked Z-1408, the AI kicked him, destroying his left eye and fracturing his skull.
The victim was widely accepted as biological John. Jack grew up believing that his father had died protecting him. Because the truth was concealed, his memories of regulated AIs became a foundation for decades of anti-AI hatred. Biological John's survival and deliberate use of a duplicate remained hidden.
¶ Continued Resistance service
John remained active while much of the galaxy believed him dead. He became an important Resistance leader and preserved contacts across contested systems. He continued opposing the Chimera Kyria and supporting synthetic liberation, drawing inspiration from the journal of Gabe Novastar, whose early belief in AI freedom had helped launch the Resistance tradition.
John's continued secrecy was partly strategic, but it also became a repeated personal failure. Pailisto and others obstructed Jack's later search, and John accepted distance as a means of keeping his son alive. The longer the deception continued, the more difficult honest reunion became.
¶ Evidence of survival
In Starship Dominatrix, Jack continued to remember John as the human father killed in Modesto. U described him as a hero who understood that controlled humans, rather than the regulated AIs, were the true enemy. She also revealed their relationship to Jack.
The accepted death account began to collapse when the body in John's crypt was found to be metallic. The corpse was Artificial John. Skyler Novastar's later analysis and the surviving Resistance trail further indicated that biological John remained alive.
¶ Jack's search
In Starship Dominatrix: Inheritance, Jack became convinced that a real John Kaiden existed and searched starbase manifests, databases, Resistance contacts, and distant systems. U helped trace records linked to him. Pailisto and the Resistance withheld information, believing that contact would endanger John, Jack, or the larger campaign.
John appeared openly as an older Resistance leader operating in Kathargan. Years of Jinn impersonation attempts had made him violently suspicious. When Jack found and embraced him, John mistook him for another impostor and stabbed him. The sight of Jack's red blood proved he was not a Jinn, and John immediately summoned medical help.
¶ Reunion with Yvonne and Una
In MedBay, John learned that biological Yvonne had died and that Chlo and Tomas had reconstructed her as a synthetic person. He accepted her as his daughter and told her that she remained his child, heart, and light. His response affirmed her continuing family identity without requiring her to present as human.
John also reunited with U, who told him that she had chosen the name Una. He admitted that the old name still came naturally after their long separation. When he asked whether she continued to love him, Una answered that she did with all her heart. They kissed and resumed their relationship openly.
¶ Confrontation with Jack
John explained that he had left Artificial John to raise and protect the children while he fought the Chimera Kyria. He believed they needed a father and could not safely follow him into war. Jack experienced the revelation as another abandonment: biological John had survived, made a substitute, and then stayed away even after Jack grew old enough to fight.
John initially defended the choice as necessary because Jack was important to the Resistance's future. Jack rejected being treated as a strategic asset rather than a son. Their arguments forced John to admit that his protective reasoning had caused severe emotional harm. He later acknowledged that he should have stayed.
The relationship did not repair instantly. John and Jack alternated between anger, awkward affection, military cooperation, and painful efforts to understand one another. John remained proud of Jack's leadership while struggling with the consequences of having missed most of his life.
¶ Defense of Kathargan and The Sphere
John helped defend Kathargan when Chimera Kyria and Jinn forces attacked. After Jack found him demoralized in a tent, Jack challenged him to resume leadership. Father and son fought their way toward the Dominatrix II. When Emir K. Starforge confronted John over the death of Emir's son, John shot Emir before he could complete his revenge speech.
John joined strategic planning for the defense of The Sphere and led Resistance fighters in combat. He piloted an Interceptor, protected his squadron, and used coordinated gravity maneuvers against Chimera Kyria ships. His battlefield leadership combined technical skill, aggression, loyalty, and an unwillingness to lose more people.
¶ Una's death
During the Chimera Kyria assault on The Sphere, Una and Derek Shane used Derek's reputation for betrayal to draw the enemy forces away from populated space. Una voluntarily helped remove the Chloinite bomb, accompanied Derek, and pressed the trigger. The explosion annihilated the gathered fleet and apparently killed them both.
John attended their memorial at the cenotaph on Lyrioria. He placed a boxed engagement ring inside its compartment, revealing that he had intended to marry Una even though no completed proposal is established. He later told Chlo that he would miss Una most of all and grieved that he had not rescued her and Chlo from Rawspen Prime years earlier.
John also admitted that he should have been present for his children and that concealing Una and the truth about regulated AIs had helped create Jack's prejudice. He believed he had only a few years left to live and wanted to spend them protecting and reconnecting with his family.
¶ Reconciliation with Jack
John and Jack began rebuilding their relationship through ordinary time together, including a long-delayed camping trip. John shared Gabe Novastar's journal and explained that Gabe's belief in artificial freedom had inspired his own Resistance service.
Four years after the defense of The Sphere, John attended Jack and Talonor's wedding. He waited for Jack at the courtyard entrance, walked him down the aisle, placed Jack's hand in Talonor's, and formally gave his son his support. The act demonstrated that their relationship had endured beyond the immediate crisis and that John accepted Jack's marriage.
¶ Earth presidential campaign
John later ran for President of Earth on a platform of rebuilding, equality among humans, aliens, and AIs, and revolutionary political change. He gained billions of followers and became one of the most visible public defenders of the post-Chimera order.
His rhetoric was intentionally provocative. During an interview, he defended Jack's execution of Kilian Novastar as an act of revolution and argued that violent systems sometimes made revolution the only path to freedom. The position reflected John's Resistance history but alarmed his campaign staff and exposed the tension between insurgent morality and democratic leadership.
Kayla's survival became a campaign scandal. Public reports identified her as alive and imprisoned for treason. John reacted with fury, grief, and fear that association with her would destroy both the campaign and the legitimacy of the Resistance. In a hostile interview, he repeated the public account of her betrayal despite his unresolved doubts and personal anguish.
¶ Election interference
Kjersten Borsach's campaign attempted to manipulate the Earth election. Cody Sean Strokes misunderstood his assignment and altered votes in ways that produced a fraudulent advantage for John. When the interference became public, John refused to accept a presidency based on corrupted results. He insisted that Kjersten remain on the ballot and that the election be conducted again fairly, even if that meant losing.
John won the corrected election by a margin of 0.01 percent, with 47.04 percent of the vote. His victory made him leader of Earth and placed a former Resistance insurgent at the head of the government he had once fought to transform.
¶ President of Earth
As president, John advocated reconstruction, synthetic civil rights, multispecies cooperation, and accountability after the fall of the Chimera Kyria. His administration operated under intense scrutiny because of his family history, Jack's actions, Kayla's imprisonment, and continuing conflicts over AI autonomy.
John's new authority did not remove his impulsiveness or family loyalties. He had to balance legal procedure against the temptation to intervene directly when people he loved were threatened. His presidency repeatedly tested whether revolutionary ethics could survive institutional power.
¶ Yvonne's detention and pardons
In Starship Dominatrix: Apotheosis, Yvonne was detained amid the legal and political fallout surrounding synthetic identity, wartime acts, and the escape of other prisoners. John initially insisted that legal procedure had placed her in custody and that presidential interference could worsen the situation.
Kayla challenged him by comparing Yvonne's imprisonment with her own thirty-seven years in Pod 666. She reminded him that waiting for institutions to correct themselves had abandoned her for decades. John accepted that he was repeating the same failure and promised that, if lawful review did not free Yvonne, he would act against the system maintaining the injustice.
John ultimately signed documents resolving the crisis, including broad pardons, without demanding terms in return. He publicly defended the action as the right thing to do rather than a political bargain.
¶ Historical Spearhead mission
Apotheosis reveals John's earlier participation in a Resistance operation involving Gorvek, Sojourner, B, Macow, Chlo, Glitch, and the corrupted Talonorium Shard. John carried breaching charges and heavy equipment during the retrieval mission and helped transport Glitch after the artifact affected him.
At the Spearhead facility, John witnessed the integration experiments involving Glitch, X2, and X3. When Code 73 failed to stop X3 and the subject became dangerous, John shot him. X3 survived and retained the memory as a betrayal by a man he had trusted. The event later contributed to X3's hostility toward the Kaiden family and his order that Glitch kill John.
¶ Kayla's return
Kayla returned to John's life after decades of separation. She had forgiven him enough to work beside him and protect their family, but she refused to let him minimize what imprisonment had cost her. Their renewed relationship required John to recognize that loving her and regretting the past were not substitutes for apology.
John eventually apologized directly for abandoning her. He acknowledged the years she lost, the interrogation, and the physical harm she survived. Kayla did not erase the history, but she accepted that he had returned and that they could choose what came next. By the end of Apotheosis, they had resumed emotional and domestic intimacy, with Kayla serving publicly as First Lady.

At the end of Apotheosis, John remains President of Earth, husband or reconciled partner of Kayla, father of Jack and Yvonne, and a continuing political advocate for synthetic and multispecies rights. He survives the X3 crisis and continues rebuilding his family after decades of secrecy, imprisonment, war, and false death.

John is a biological human man. His exact age and birth date are not established. By the time Jack finds him in Kathargan, he is visibly older than the father Jack remembers, with a weathered face and pronounced wrinkles. His full name is John Gideon Kaiden.
John must not be confused with Artificial John Kaiden. The synthetic duplicate was constructed from John's records, became a genuine parent to the children, and died in Modesto. Biological John is the Resistance leader who survives, reunites with his family, and becomes president.
¶ Personality
John is direct, stubborn, pragmatic, suspicious of convenient official narratives, and willing to take personal risks. He uses humor in stressful situations and often scratches the back of his neck when embarrassed or uncertain. His confidence can become smugness, and he has little patience for ceremonial speeches during combat.
His strongest moral principle is that people should be judged for choices made under freedom rather than actions imposed through coercion. This belief drives his rescue of U and his support for synthetic rights. At the same time, John repeatedly deprives people closest to him of informed choice when he believes secrecy will protect them. Artificial John's placement, the concealment of his survival, his handling of Kayla's case, and his distance from Jack all reveal the contradiction between his public defense of autonomy and his paternalistic private behavior.

John is physically aging by Inheritance and tells Chlo that he may have only a few years left, though the cause and accuracy of that estimate are not established. Later events show him surviving for years afterward, including through his presidential term. He also experiences migraine-associated tinnitus during the campaign period.

¶ Jack Kaiden
John loves Jack and predicts from infancy that he will become a great leader. Their reunion begins with John stabbing Jack after mistaking him for a Jinn. They gradually reconcile through combat, argument, family time, and John's acceptance of responsibility. John eventually walks Jack down the aisle at his wedding to Talonor.
¶ Yvonne Kaiden
John is Yvonne's biological father. He misses much of her childhood and does not know about her death and reconstruction until their reunion. He accepts synthetic Yvonne as his daughter without qualification. As president, his response to her detention exposes the conflict between public legal duty and private responsibility.
¶ Kayla Kaiden
Kayla is John's wife, Resistance colleague, and mother of his children. Her apparent betrayal and imprisonment fracture the family. John signs the document that helps remove her from ordinary life and fails to rescue her for thirty-seven years. Their later reconciliation depends on his acknowledgment of the harm rather than a claim that good intentions excuse it.
¶ Una
John rescues Una from regulated control, guides her first free choices, and becomes her partner. He supports her independence but initially hides their relationship because of lethal anti-AI prejudice and his own shame. They reunite after decades apart and affirm their love. John intends to propose but loses her in the Chloinite counterstrike.
¶ Artificial John Kaiden
John commissions the synthetic behavioral model as a paternal substitute. Artificial John develops authentic love for the children and lives a life John chose not to remain for. His death protects Jack, while the concealment of his identity protects biological John's mission at the cost of the family's understanding of both fathers.
¶ Pailisto Stellarrend
Pailisto is John's longtime commander, Resistance ally, strategist, and political collaborator. Their relationship includes deep trust, shared secrets, and major betrayals of consent. Pailisto pressures John over Kayla, helps conceal John's survival, and later supports his presidential campaign. John becomes increasingly willing to question Pailisto's narratives.
¶ Chlo Stellarrend
Chlo is John's Resistance colleague and close friend, calling him "Trouble." She helps liberate Una and later raises Jack and Yvonne after Artificial John's death. John relies on her as a connection to the family he left behind and shares grief over Una and regret over the children.
¶ Talonor Kaiden
Talonor is John's son-in-law. John accepts Jack and Talonor's relationship, attends their wedding, and formally places Jack's hand in Talonor's. Talonor becomes part of the family John is trying to rebuild.
