Biological John commissioned the model because he intended to return to the Resistance but wanted Yvonne and infant Jack to have a present father. Artificial John was designed to look and behave like John without containing or continuing John's consciousness. He inherited biographical memories as information, while his emotional attachment to the children developed through his own experiences with them.
Artificial John returned to the Kaiden home in Modesto and assumed biological John's family identity without the children's informed consent. He became a genuine parent to Yvonne and Jack, raised them for several years, taught Jack advanced ghost-drive mathematics, and prepared the family for emergencies through the Mouse Protocol. On December 24, 2566 CE, Z-1408 and two other regulated AIs attacked the safe house. Artificial John died fighting beside Sojourner after hiding five-year-old Jack beneath his bed.
Because his synthetic identity remained secret, Jack believed for twenty-seven years that he had watched his biological father die. The discovery of a metallic body in John's crypt exposed the substitution and led Jack to find biological John alive. Artificial John's life remains central to the series' questions about copying, parenthood, programming, and choice: he was built to resemble a father, but the love and fear he experienced with the children became his own.

¶ Biography
¶ Commissioning the behavioral model
In early 2564 CE, biological John Kaiden expected to leave his children again for dangerous Resistance service. Kayla Kaiden had been arrested, Yvonne was struggling with the family's instability, and Jack was still an infant who barely knew his father. John believed the children needed someone who could remain present even if he could not.
John contacted Tomas Tristar at a Resistance safe house at 1940 West Cypher Court in Blue Wave City. Tomas had developed a process for creating artificial people from behavioral data. He warned John that the process could not transfer a mind, preserve consciousness, or make biological John survive through another body. It would create a new synthetic person trained to resemble him.
John accepted the distinction. He supplied Tomas with service records, communications, journals, voice recordings, videos, social-media material, and other personal archives. Tomas explained that gaps in the record would require the model to estimate how John might have behaved. John considered imperfect resemblance acceptable so long as the resulting person could care for the children, praise their successes, comfort them, and love them.
¶ Creation and inherited information
Tomas constructed Artificial John as a behavioral model with the outward appearance, voice, mannerisms, recorded memories, and learned behavioral patterns of biological John. His exact activation date, manufacturing process, and complete internal architecture are not established.
Artificial John possessed information about John's life and family. He remembered the children's names and faces and knew incidents documented in the source material, including Yvonne striking a first-grade classmate who repeatedly touched her hair. These records did not initially produce emotional attachment. Before entering the family home, Artificial John admitted that he knew the children as data but did not yet love them through lived experience.
He understood that presenting himself as their father involved deception and worried that he would be lying to them. Tomas argued that the relationship did not need to remain artificial in the emotional sense. The children already loved the father he resembled, and Artificial John could allow new attachment to develop rather than merely performing a fixed script.
¶ Return to the Kaiden family
Tomas accompanied Artificial John to the Kaiden home. Artificial John hesitated outside and said that he was not ready to be a father. Tomas encouraged him to enter and discover whether he could become one.
Patricia Ashworth answered the door and called Yvonne and Jack. Yvonne ran to him and hugged him but immediately sensed that he seemed different. Artificial John told her that something had happened to him and that he would need a few days to readjust. The statement concealed his construction while acknowledging the difference she perceived.
Infant Jack waddled toward him and wrapped his arms around his leg. Artificial John initially did not know how to respond. Jack's unconditional affection created a situation for which inherited information could not supply a complete answer. Artificial John lifted him, called him his big boy, and smiled. The moment marked the beginning of a paternal bond formed by Artificial John's own experience rather than biological John's archived emotions.
¶ Parenthood
Artificial John remained with Yvonne and Jack and became their father in daily life. Although his assignment originated in biological John's plan, his continuing care was not a remote extension of John's consciousness. He accumulated experiences that biological John did not share and formed relationships distinct from the man he modeled.
He helped provide the ordinary stability the children had lost after Kayla's arrest and biological John's absence. To them, he was simply Dad. Family use of that title reflects the relationship they lived rather than proof that he and biological John were the same person.
Artificial John raised infant Jack through early childhood and remained part of Yvonne's life as she entered adolescence. He knew Jack's fears, schoolwork, habits, and developing intelligence. His familiarity with biological John's technical knowledge allowed him to teach Jack advanced ghost-drive mathematics, but the patience and affection shown during those lessons belonged to the parent Artificial John had become.
¶ Resistance safe house
The Modesto home also functioned as a Resistance safe house. Artificial John had access to weapons, secure storage, a CommLink watch, emergency procedures, and Resistance contacts. He maintained enough of biological John's military and technical patterns to act as an operative within the network, although his exact formal rank and the extent to which other Resistance members knew his synthetic identity are not established.
Artificial John taught Jack the Mouse Protocol, an emergency routine in which the child hid silently beneath his bed when dangerous intruders approached. Repeated practice prepared Jack to survive the attack that eventually reached the house.
¶ Christmas Eve attack
On December 24, 2566 CE, five-year-old Jack woke Artificial John because he believed Krampus was outside his clubhouse. Artificial John reassured him, discussed the family's Christmas arrangements, and redirected him to unfinished homework. He sat beside Jack and helped him solve the Dark Matter Dimensional Resonance Equation for ghost-drive engineering.
Sojourner then contacted him with an emergency warning. Three regulated AIs were following her, and the Modesto house was the last safe house still standing. Most of the nearby Resistance network had been killed, with Pailisto, U, B, Tomas, Chlo, and Macow among the few known survivors.
Artificial John opened the house to Sojourner and retrieved plasma rifles. When he saw Jack watching from the bedroom, he abandoned immediate combat preparation long enough to protect him. He reminded Jack of the Mouse Protocol, told him to hide, said that he loved him and was proud of him, and promised they would see each other again. His visible fear frightened Jack because the child had never seen it in his father before.
¶ Death
Artificial John and Sojourner confronted Z-1408 and two other Chimera Kyria-controlled AIs. Both defenders shouted "For the Resistance" as the attack began. Z-1408 fired through Artificial John's chest, leaving a hole where a human heart should have been. Sojourner was also killed.
Jack witnessed Artificial John's final moments from beneath the bed. After the regulated AIs initially scanned the room and began to leave, Jack crawled out and held his father's body. When Jack attacked Z-1408, the AI kicked him, destroying his left eye and fracturing his skull.
Z-1408 acted under an Autonomy Regulator and did not freely choose the assassination. X3 had earlier ordered the regulated Z-1408 to kill "John Kaiden," but the record does not establish whether X3 specifically intended Artificial John, mistook him for biological John, or knowingly accepted the duplicate as the target.
¶ Apparent death of biological John
Artificial John's body was publicly identified and buried as John Kaiden. The substitution protected biological John's survival and Resistance operations but erased Artificial John's separate identity. Friends, family, and official records treated the dead parent as the human man he had modeled.
Jack spent the next twenty-seven years believing that a controlled AI had murdered his biological father. The loss shaped his nightmares, grief, anger, career, and hatred of artificial intelligence. He remembered Artificial John's face and love as his father's without knowing that another John remained alive elsewhere.
Yvonne also lost the parent who had helped raise her. After Artificial John's death, Chlo Stellarrend and Pailisto Stellarrend became adoptive parents to Jack and Yvonne. Their care did not replace the relationship the children had already formed with Artificial John.
¶ The crypt discovery
In Starship Dominatrix, Jack repeatedly relived the Christmas attack. During one recurrence, he noticed a spark of electricity inside the wound in his father's chest. The detail suggested that the body was synthetic and led him to believe that a "real" John Kaiden might still exist.
The body in John's crypt was later examined and revealed to be metallic. Yvonne confirmed that the dead John was an AI. Skyler Novastar independently inferred the same fact from the coroner's unusual findings and used it to conclude that biological John might be alive.
The discovery did not make Artificial John's death unreal. It changed which John had died and exposed the deception surrounding the family. Jack's grief remained attached to the person who had raised, taught, protected, and loved him.
¶ Biological John's explanation
Jack eventually found biological John alive in Kathargan. John explained that he had commissioned and left an AI duplicate to raise the children while he returned to the Resistance. He presented the arrangement as protection: Jack and Yvonne needed a father, while following biological John into war would have endangered them.
Jack experienced the truth as abandonment and substitution. The explanation revealed that Artificial John had occupied the role because biological John deliberately chose not to remain. Biological John later admitted that the decision harmed Jack and that he should have stayed.
Artificial John's existence therefore cannot be reduced to proof of biological John's love or failure. John created the circumstances, but Artificial John performed the years of caregiving, formed the relationships, faced the attack, and died protecting Jack.
¶ X3's use of Artificial John's memory
In Starship Dominatrix: Apotheosis, X3 forced Jack to revisit the Modesto attack as part of a psychological assault. X3 described Artificial John as a duplicate built to be indistinguishable from the original and challenged Jack to decide whether a programmed capacity for love could become authentic choice.
X3 argued that Artificial John's love was merely architecture and compared it to the systems influencing Jack. Jack rejected the claim and insisted that his father's love had been real. The confrontation reaffirmed Artificial John's place in Jack's identity: knowing his synthetic origin did not undo the relationship or turn years of parenting into empty imitation.
¶ Legacy
Artificial John's life is one of the series' clearest examples of behavioral resemblance developing into independent personhood. He began with another man's records, appearance, knowledge, and intended social role. He nevertheless encountered situations the source material could not decide for him and formed emotional bonds through lived experience.
His story also exposes the ethical problems of creating a person to replace someone else. Artificial John entered a family under a false identity, and neither he nor the children appear to have received a fully open choice about the arrangement. His purpose was assigned before activation, yet his conduct within that purpose became personally meaningful.
Artificial John died without public recognition as himself. His crypt, reputation, and final stand were attributed to biological John. The later separation of the two identities restores credit for the parent who actually raised and protected Jack during those years.

Artificial John was a synthetic humanoid designed to be outwardly indistinguishable from biological John Kaiden. He reproduced John's face, voice, mannerisms, apparent memories, technical knowledge, and behavioral tendencies. Internally, his body contained metallic and electrical components exposed by the plasma wound through his chest.
He was not a consciousness transfer, continuation, resurrection, remote body, or later version of biological John. Tomas explicitly constructed him as a new artificial person using behavioral training data. The name Artificial John Kaiden distinguishes him for encyclopedia purposes; the characters generally knew him simply as John or Dad while his identity remained concealed.
¶ Personality
Artificial John's initial personality reflected biological John's recorded behavior, including humor, technical competence, concern for the children, and physical mannerisms such as cracking his neck or rubbing the back of it. The model contained gaps and could only estimate how John would act in undocumented situations.
His uncertainty before meeting the children demonstrates self-awareness rather than mechanical confidence. He worried about deception, questioned whether he could be a good father, and recognized the absence of emotional attachment. His willingness to let attachment form allowed him to develop beyond the archive used to create him.
As a parent, he was patient, affectionate, protective, and proud. During the final attack, he experienced fear but prioritized Jack's safety, expressed love, and fought to protect the child. Whether these traits began as architecture does not settle whether his later emotions were real; the narrative and Jack treat them as genuine.
¶ Abilities
Artificial John inherited or modeled biological John's knowledge of combat engineering, ghost-drive mathematics, Resistance procedures, firearms, emergency planning, and military conduct. He could convincingly function as John within the family and Resistance safe-house network.
The exact physical capabilities of his synthetic body are not detailed. He could pass as human under ordinary observation, eat or participate in domestic life without arousing suspicion, and sustain normal parental activities. A plasma bolt through the chest was fatal.

¶ Jack Kaiden
Artificial John raised Jack from infancy to age five. He taught him, comforted him, prepared him for danger, kissed him goodnight, and died protecting him. Jack regarded him as his father both before and after learning the truth. The death became the central trauma of Jack's childhood and shaped his later moral and political development.
¶ Yvonne Kaiden
Artificial John returned when Yvonne was old enough to detect that he seemed different. She accepted his explanation that he needed time to readjust and continued treating him as her father. He helped raise biological Yvonne during the years before his death. The record does not establish that she learned his identity while he was alive.
¶ Biological John Kaiden
Biological John supplied the archive from which Artificial John was created and assigned him the paternal role he could not reliably fill. They were distinct people. Artificial John's new experiences and feelings did not transfer back to John, and John's later survival did not continue Artificial John's consciousness.
¶ Tomas Tristar
Tomas created Artificial John and clearly explained that he would be a new person rather than biological John's survival. He accompanied Artificial John to the family home, encouraged him to allow attachment to develop, and reassured him that uncertainty did not make him incapable of becoming a father.
¶ Patricia Ashworth
Patricia was present when Artificial John returned to the Kaiden home and welcomed him as John. She was already helping care for Yvonne and Jack during biological John's absences. Whether she knew his synthetic identity is not established.
¶ Sojourner
Sojourner fought beside Artificial John during the attack on the Modesto safe house. They died defending Jack and the Resistance after she brought the pursuing AIs to the last surviving local refuge.
¶ Z-1408
Z-1408 killed Artificial John while under coercive control. Jack directed his hatred toward Z-1408 and AIs generally for decades, but the later revelation of Autonomy Regulators separated the person of Z-1408 from the forced act performed through his body.
