Nightclaw is an antique leg knife carried by Derek Shane. It is linked to a twenty-first-century Resistance assassination plot and to Derek's escape from childhood trafficking and abuse.
¶ History
Derek was sold into trafficking at age five and abused by Toriani Lokan. He killed Toriani with Nightclaw and came to regard the blade as his savior and a reminder not to control others.
¶ Properties
Nightclaw's glow changes from white to green and later back to white in relation to Derek's actions. Whether it possesses intelligence, an evaluative mechanism, or another responsive technology remains unresolved.
¶ Symbolism
Una calls Derek “our Nightclaw,” reframing the weapon's protective role as a description of the person he chooses to become.

Nightclaw is not Derek himself, and its possible judgment must not replace analysis of his agency.
