Kroven Vaskyr is a Tierian pilot and a principal member of the Dominatrix and Dominatrix II crews. He enters the story as an exceptionally capable but abrasive pilot motivated by money, pleasure, and self-preservation. Across the series, his loyalty develops from something he performs for payment into a genuine commitment to Jack Kaiden, the crew, and their shared causes.
Kroven is also a survivor of violence and chronic pain. An injury sustained during a failed theft led to a pain-pill addiction that is visible from his first voyage. His recovery, grief, prejudices, friendships, and criminal past complicate any simple picture of him as either comic relief or dependable officer.
¶ Background
Kroven attended piloting school with Octavia Silva Kaiden. Octavia remembers him as one of the strongest students in their class, while Kroven takes pride in the spatial reasoning he associates with his Tierian heritage.
Before joining the Dominatrix, Kroven participated in thefts and confidence schemes with Derek Shane, Vorath Vaskyr, and Tyrael Galen. About seven years before the events of Inheritance, the group attempted to steal the Aegis of Zeus from the Artifact Research Center in The Sphere. Security officers caught and severely beat Kroven. Tyrael intervened and was imprisoned, while Kroven escaped. Kroven identifies the injuries from that attack as the origin of his chronic pain and dependence on medication.
Kroven is married to Vorath Vaskyr. This relationship is author-confirmed canon, while the published narrative depicts Vorath as Kroven's husband without explaining when or how the marriage began.
¶ Aboard the Dominatrix
Pailisto Stellarrend recruits Kroven as the original Dominatrix's pilot and offers him an enormous payment for the voyage to The Sphere. Kroven's technical skill is evident in his precise docking at Io Station and his ability to navigate the shadow rift. His conduct is less reliable: he drinks before flying, misuses pain medication, cuts lines, spends impulsively, and treats loyalty as a transaction.
Kroven initially directs an anti-Jinseokonian slur at Pailisto. Talonor Kaiden physically forces an apology, and Andryanos influences the encounter telepathically. The apology is therefore not a clean moment of voluntary moral growth. Kroven nevertheless stays with the voyage and gradually forms real bonds with people he first regarded with prejudice or suspicion.
When an alternate future appears inside the temporal anomaly, Kroven is among the crew members whose despair and fear are exposed. His survival in the changed timeline gives him the opportunity to become more than the paid pilot he expected to be.
¶ Dominatrix II service
By Inheritance, Kroven is a commissioned officer serving at tactical aboard Dominatrix II. He helps Jack investigate biological John Kaiden, reconnects the crew with Derek, and accepts responsibility for Derek's volatile behavior aboard ship. His knowledge of Derek's history and reliance on Nightclaw allows him to argue against an action that might worsen the situation.
Kroven eventually admits that he, Vorath, and others once pursued criminal schemes and that he had considered betraying the crew for a bounty before choosing them instead. Jack confronts him violently but ultimately keeps him as both subordinate and friend. Kroven swears loyalty to Jack, the crew, and The Sphere. That promise marks a turn from paid performance toward chosen allegiance, though it does not erase his crimes or the harm caused by his earlier decisions.
Derek and Kroven retain a close, sexually intimate friendship rooted in their shared past. After Derek and Una sacrifice themselves, Kroven grieves intensely. Mistress helps him understand Derek as chosen family and frames grief as something carried rather than simply eliminated.
¶ Later events
Kroven accompanies Jack, Yvonne, and Talonor into Pod 666, where he unexpectedly reunites with the imprisoned Tyrael Galen. He tells Tyrael about Derek's death and records the information needed to contact him again.
During the War of Flesh and Steel, Kroven serves on the bridge, volunteers for night command, operates tactical systems, and flies combat missions. He rescues Titus under fire and destroys a pursuing Domain vessel through a sudden reversal maneuver. When a shadow creature infiltrates Dominatrix II, he helps drive and trap it using concentrated Luminite light.
Kroven's later role is not limited to combat. He notices changes in Jack's behavior, offers Talonor perceptive advice about trauma, supports crewmates through uncertainty, and participates in the Great Healing. His humor remains profane and often inappropriate, but it coexists with practical courage and a growing awareness of other people's pain.
¶ Characteristics
Kroven has pink skin, white hair, wings, a tail, and a lance-shaped nose. His wings aid short glides and are expressive parts of his body language. He is a highly skilled pilot and tactical officer with strong spatial reasoning, quick reactions, and experience in both civilian and combat flight.
He is impulsive, vain, sexually candid, irreverent, and frequently insubordinate. Music, games, food, and flirtation are recurring pleasures. He also lives with chronic back pain and a history of medication misuse. His recovery is uneven rather than a single completed event.
Kroven can be prejudiced and cruel, especially early in the series, and he does not always recognize the seriousness of his words. At the same time, he can read emotional situations with surprising accuracy, protect vulnerable friends, and act decisively when other people are in danger. His central development is the movement from self-interested survival toward freely chosen responsibility.
