Una, originally designated U-84129 and commonly called U after her liberation, was an Accent-class artificial intelligence, Resistance member, communications officer, and advocate for synthetic autonomy. The Chimera Kyria installed an Autonomy Regulator in her SentientCore chip and used her as a combat android for decades. Although Una remained conscious throughout that period, the regulator controlled her body, objectives, loyalties, values, and presentation, forcing her to commit violence and endure sexual exploitation. John Kaiden rescued her after Rift Vanguard Six's mission on Aris, while Tomas Tristar and Chlo Stellarrend repaired her chassis and removed the regulator.
Learning to make choices for the first time, U reclaimed her identity as a woman, developed independent friendships, preferences, and spiritual beliefs, and entered a romantic relationship with John. After spending nineteen years trapped at Rawspen Prime and being presumed dead, she escaped with Chlo, Yvonne Kaiden, Octavia Silva Kaiden, and Cartridge. She later joined Jack Kaiden's crew, chose the name Una as an expression of wholeness and individuality, helped shape the liberated-AI political movement, and reunited with John.
During the Chimera Kyria attack on The Sphere, Una voluntarily joined Derek Shane in drawing the enemy fleet away from populated space with a Chloinite bomb. She personally pressed the trigger, annihilating the gathered Chimera Kyria forces and apparently dying with Derek. Their action saved The Sphere. Una was subsequently memorialized beside Derek on Lyrioria, while John mourned the woman he had intended to marry.
¶ Biography
¶ Creation and enslavement
Una's activation date, manufacturer, and original intended role are not established. She was built as an Accent-class AI and assigned the registration number U-84129. Her chassis had slim, deliberately elegant proportions, a designed face, polymer skin over a metallic-and-composite structure, and forearm-mounted plasma bolt rifles. Her mind operated through a SentientCore chip and neural lattice.
Like other AIs of her kind, U-84129 was activated without a fixed gender and was meant to make gender one of her first personal choices. Her first aspiration was to spread love and joy, make friends, experience love, and live life loudly. The Chimera Kyria denied her that life by attaching an Autonomy Regulator to her SentientCore chip. The device did not render her unconscious or erase her personality. It left her aware while overriding her ability to control her own body and assigning her objectives, loyalties, values, and actions.
U-84129 spent decades under this control. She was stored in a charging alcove with other Accent-class units and could not move without orders. The Chimera Kyria deployed her for labor and combat, forcing her to kill civilians and other targets while experiencing every act from a first-person perspective. Her earliest desire to love others became so painful that she buried the memory and increasingly accepted the identity imposed upon her.
The Chimera Kyria also denied regulated AIs control over gender and sexuality. Soldiers altered U-84129's body according to their own sexual preferences, frequently forcing her into a male configuration. She was compelled to report male soldiers who selected a male configuration for her, after which the Chimera Kyria discharged them for homosexual conduct. Her later reclamation of womanhood was therefore both a return to her original choice and a rejection of years of bodily and sexual coercion.
¶ Rescue on Aris
In 2564 CE, the Chimera Kyria stationed U-84129 with eleven other Accent-class AIs at a stronghold near Kreylon on Aris. During Rift Vanguard Six's hostage-rescue operation, the regulator ordered the twelve AIs to kill the squad. A plasma-grenade explosion destroyed the other eleven units and catastrophically damaged U-84129. Debris pinned her beneath a collapsed structure, both hip actuators were ruined, her left arm was severely damaged, and she could no longer stand.
Still conscious, U-84129 watched Rift Vanguard Six treat and evacuate the injured hostages. Because she understood herself as an enemy weapon who had harmed others, she assumed that she did not deserve rescue. John Kaiden nevertheless insisted on taking her with them. Commander Gorvek Thol allowed him thirty seconds, and John and Macow pulled her from the rubble and carried her out.
¶ Repair and removal of the Autonomy Regulator
During the five-week return journey to The Sphere, Tomas Tristar and Chlo Stellarrend rebuilt much of U-84129's body aboard the SSS Roc. They replaced both hip actuators, rebuilt the damaged piston assembly in her left arm and the servos governing fine motor control, and installed newer circuitry. The surviving original components consisted largely of her frame, power core, regulation hardware, neural lattice, and face.
Tomas surgically separated the Autonomy Regulator from her SentientCore chip. Because the regulator was fused into the chip's secondary lattice, its removal was an invasive procedure rather than the release of a simple external restraint. When U-84129 awakened, her optical circuits changed from regulated red to blue. Chlo greeted her as "Sunshine," the nickname she continued using throughout Una's life.
The crew initially secured U-84129 in a reinforced restraint rig until they could assess what she would do without forced objectives. She responded by threatening to kill everyone aboard and immediately questioned how physical restraints differed morally from automated control. John conducted her Transition Interview and argued that freedom did not eliminate consequences: the regulator had made her wishes irrelevant, whereas the restraints were a response to wishes and actions that now belonged to her. He described her as the first version of herself ever allowed to exist.
During the following night, U-84129 attempted to probe and manipulate Sojourner, who was assigned to watch her. Sojourner refused either to condemn or idealize her. She judged U-84129's claim of past coercion separately from the question of what she would freely do next and told her that only her conduct over time could answer it.
¶ First choices
The next morning, John brought a meal into the cargo bay and set a place for U-84129 despite knowing that she did not eat. He treated the empty place setting as recognition that an AI could belong at the table and participate in the social ritual. Before replacing her battery pack, he asked permission to open her chassis, giving her an opportunity to grant bodily consent.
John then dismissed the guard and released her. U-84129 extended her forearm rifle and pressed it against his head but found that, without the regulator, she did not want to fire. She withdrew the weapon rather than kill him. The refusal became one of her first wholly voluntary acts and established the moral divide between the atrocities performed through her body and the person she chose to become.
John began calling her U instead of using her registration number. When he asked which gender she wanted, U recovered the memory that she had originally chosen to be female. From that point onward, she presented herself as a woman and used she/her pronouns. Her transition did not create a new person; it allowed the existing person to reclaim an identity the Chimera Kyria had suppressed.
¶ Life at The Sphere
After the Roc reached The Sphere, John helped U establish a life that did not revolve solely around him. She received personal quarters, a DataPad, a credit card, clothes, decorations, and control over her cosmetic presentation. She selected a hairstyle attachment composed of metallic composite filaments and fiber-optic strands gathered into a tight bun.
Through ordinary choices, U discovered that her favorite color was green, that she enjoyed jazz by John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, and Sonny Rollins, and that she preferred walks through parks beside rivers. She took up knitting, chose Pretty Princess Power Ponies: Titanic vs. Kraken as her favorite film, and decisively defeated John at Oligopoly. She also developed preferences about clothing, seating, and how her quarters were arranged. John taught her how to say and accept no, establish limits, recognize consent, own property, manage money, and understand that trust and friendship had to develop through time and conduct.
U formed friendships independently of John and took part in restorative work for people injured by the Chimera Kyria. She earned acceptance into the Resistance, trained as the Roc's communications officer, and increasingly built her identity around freely chosen service rather than imposed obedience.
¶ Relationship with John Kaiden
John and U's relationship changed gradually from captor and rescued prisoner to mentor and student, then to friendship and romance. John encouraged her autonomy and did not dictate her friendships, beliefs, or identity. U eventually applied his own lesson about acting without certainty when she asked whether he would kiss her. They began dating and became sexually intimate.
Their relationship remained dangerous because human-AI romance was socially taboo and could provoke death threats. John took U on dates in secluded locations and kept the relationship hidden, including from Jack and Yvonne. U understood that he was trying to protect them, but she also believed that he was ashamed to be publicly seen with her. Despite the secrecy and the pain it caused, she regarded John as the first human who had loved her for herself and loved him deeply in return.
¶ Disappearance and Rawspen Prime
U became separated from her Resistance companions and spent nineteen years at Rawspen Prime, a pirate station. The circumstances that brought her there are not fully established. By the time Chlo encountered her again, U worked at the station's prisoner-processing desk under armed supervision. A guard tased her for interrupting her duties, demonstrating that her apparent employment did not give her meaningful safety or independence.
The Resistance believed U had died during those nineteen years. U described her time at Rawspen Prime as a nightmare and identified Macow as her only remaining connection to the station. After Chlo, Yvonne, Octavia, and Cartridge were captured there, U quietly warned Chlo to take care of herself. When they escaped, Chlo invited U to join them. Learning that Macow had died while protecting the group severed U's final attachment to Rawspen Prime, and she abandoned her post without hesitation.
U armed herself and helped the group reach The Submission. She protected Chlo from Kollum Burnswick and explained to Yvonne that her Autonomy Regulator had been removed. She escaped aboard The Submission shortly before Yvonne destroyed Rawspen Prime through the station's own Chimera Kyria failsafe.
¶ Meeting Jack Kaiden
U had long wanted to meet Jack because John had spoken proudly of him. Chlo initially asked her to hide because Jack's childhood trauma had developed into an intense hatred of AIs. U objected that Jack would eventually need to confront a free AI, but reluctantly agreed and concealed herself aboard The Submission. Jack detected an AI connection through his implant and searched for her.
After Yvonne's synthetic nature was exposed, U approached Jack despite fearing his reaction. She explained the distinction between a SentientCore chip and an Autonomy Regulator, described John and Chlo's role in her rescue, and challenged Jack's belief that regulated AIs had willingly committed their crimes. She also disclosed her intimate relationship with John. Jack and U developed cautious cooperation, beginning with a shared engine repair, and she became Yvonne's friend.
¶ Spirituality and reconciliation with Jack
U practiced meditation at Mount Arhat above Manjushri Valley in Pod 8. She believed an AI could use quantum isolation and recursive quantum calculations to explore unconscious possibilities without immediately collapsing them into a single outcome. In her understanding, sufficiently deep meditation allowed an AI to form a connection with a universal quantum field and approach the Akashic Records, which she described as a spiritual repository of knowledge and events.
When Jack interrupted her meditation and questioned whether an AI could be spiritual, U defended her path as no less real than biological spirituality. Their conversation moved through synthetic gender, sexual exploitation, regulated violence, and her love for John. Jack apologized for his ignorance, called her beautiful, and asked jokingly whether he should call her "Mom." The exchange did not erase his trauma, but it helped him distinguish free synthetic people from controlled bodies and allowed them to regard one another as family.
At the close of the conflict depicted in Starship Dominatrix, U signed a new mission contract and joined the Dominatrix II as its communications and operations officer under Captain Jack Kaiden.
¶ Choosing the name Una
While serving aboard the Dominatrix II, U participated in an emerging civil movement through which liberated AIs rejected registration numbers and selected personal names. She chose Una. The name honored a strong, resourceful, and independent woman she had met while meditating at Mount Arhat. It also meant "one" to her and expressed individuality, connection with other sentient beings, the choice of one path among infinite possibilities, and her belief that she was whole.
Chlo enthusiastically affirmed the choice and encouraged her to tell the crew. Una feared Jack's reaction, but he accepted the name and informed her that it was lovely. Her adoption of the name completed a gradual movement from an imposed serial identity to self-authorship; it did not replace U-84129 or divide her into another person.
¶ AI political advocacy
Una supported collective political organization among liberated AIs while preserving the principle that no liberation technology could choose their beliefs for them. She helped shape the proposal that the AIs receive Grivoral as a homeworld after evidence indicated that actions by The Sphere had probably caused the extinction of its biological population. Her advocacy treated synthetic independence, naming, community, and political standing as connected parts of personhood.
Una recognized that The Weapon disabled Autonomy Regulators rather than programming allegiance or morality. Her own conduct remained evidence of that distinction: she maintained friendships and beliefs that were not installed by the device, disagreed with others, pursued spirituality, and made choices that exposed her to personal risk.
¶ Friendship with Derek Shane
Una initially distrusted Derek Shane, particularly after he learned that the Dominatrix II carried a Chloinite bomb. When Derek had an opportunity to steal the weapon and refused, she concluded that his actions had earned trust. She thanked him for protecting the crew and told him that he was loved as part of their family.
Derek reacted by claiming that AIs could not experience love. Una's visible pain caused him to regret the attack, and their argument led him to disclose his childhood abuse, trafficking, and escape from Toriani Lokan. Una interpreted his devotion to Nightclaw as an expression of his need for safety and control over his own life. She told him that his vulnerability contradicted his belief that trust always resulted in harm and called him the crew's protector—"our Nightclaw." The conversation created a bond that later shaped their final mission.
¶ Reunion with John
Una eventually learned that biological John had survived and was still fighting with the Resistance. When they reunited, John initially called her U before correcting himself. Una told him about her chosen name, her developing relationship with Jack, and Jack's question about calling her Mom. John asked whether she still loved him, and Una answered that she did with all her heart. They kissed and resumed their relationship openly.
Their reunion also brought Una into John's renewed relationship with Yvonne and Jack. John recognized synthetic Yvonne as his daughter, while Una occupied an informal place within the Kaiden family without claiming to have married John or raised his children.
¶ Orphan Una
Una regularly visited Pod 1368, one of The Sphere's impoverished and neglected communities. There she cared for an orphaned girl who lived in a damaged building, bringing her meals and helping her feel safe. The child named herself Una and owned a worn doll modeled after the AI.
Una brought Jack to meet the child both to expose the severe inequality among The Sphere's pods and to challenge his fixation on John's absence. She argued that John had left Jack in order to protect him and had given him an AI guardian, while the orphan Una had no parent or protector capable of making the same choice. The meeting helped Jack place his family trauma within the wider consequences of the war and The Sphere's failures.
¶ Destruction of Pod 1368
The Chimera Kyria attacked The Sphere with chronoton-shrouded weapons, destroying forty-five pods and killing more than one trillion people. Pod 1368 was annihilated in the first strike, and the child Una was vaporized with its population.
From the Dominatrix II, Una searched the wreckage for the pod and understood that the child was almost certainly dead. Her grief was immediate and profound, but she remained at her communications station during the opening defense and continued reporting enemy movements.
¶ Final mission and death
During the battle, Derek formed a plan to exploit his reputation for betrayal. He intended to offer the Chloinite bomb to Skyler Novastar in exchange for concentrating the Chimera Kyria fleet at coordinates far from The Sphere. Andryanos, who had foreseen enough of Derek's intention to wish him luck, did not expect Una's participation. Una inferred the plan from their exchange and requested permission to leave the bridge under the pretext of a mission-critical problem.
Una found Derek attempting to open the armory safe. Rather than expose him, she entered the access code, removed the bomb, and carried it to Interceptor 2. She told Derek that the Chimera Kyria had taken her Una and that she wanted to be present when he fulfilled his intended role. Her grief influenced her choice, but she understood the strategic purpose and acted without compulsion.
Derek deceived Skyler into ordering the Chimera Kyria forces to abandon The Sphere and converge on the transfer point. Una accompanied him aboard the interceptor. Once Jack realized their plan, the crew saluted them and withdrew beyond the Chloinite bomb's destructive radius. When Skyler ordered the bomb delivered, Derek rejected the demand, and Una smiled and pressed its trigger.
The detonation destroyed the Chimera Kyria forces within a solar-system-scale radius and apparently annihilated Una and Derek. Their action ended the immediate attack and saved the surviving population of The Sphere. Andryanos could not say whether the outcome arose from destiny, Una's free will, or chaos. Whatever role prophecy or circumstance played in Derek's plan, Una's participation was her own voluntary act and was not programmed by The Weapon.
¶ Memorial and legacy
Una and Derek were honored with a cenotaph on the ringed aqua-blue planet Lyrioria. Its statue depicted Derek standing heroically with Una's hand resting reassuringly on his shoulder. Jack praised them as members of the crew's family whose final choice allowed others to live.
John placed a boxed engagement ring in the cenotaph's compartment. Although he did not explicitly state that he had already proposed, the offering revealed an unrealized intention to marry Una. He later told Chlo that he would miss Una most of all and continued to regard her life as proof that a synthetic person freed from control could choose love and moral growth.
Una's life became an example of the series' distinction between awareness, bodily control, legal freedom, and moral agency. The harm committed through her regulated body remained real, but responsibility for it belonged to those who controlled her. Her freely chosen refusal to kill John, her reclamation of womanhood, her spiritual and political life, and her final sacrifice demonstrated the person she became once her choices belonged to her.

Una was an Accent-class synthetic AI housed in a humanoid android chassis. She was initially identified by the registration number U-84129, used U as a shortened name after liberation, and later selected Una as her personal name. These names describe consecutive stages in one continuing life.
Before reclaiming her gender, U-84129 is referred to with they/them pronouns. After remembering and affirming her original choice, Una identified as a woman and used she/her pronouns. Her gender was neither assigned by John nor created by bodily modification; it was a personal identity first chosen at activation, suppressed by the Chimera Kyria, and reclaimed under freedom.
¶ Physical description
Una had a slim, elegant humanoid form with deliberately designed facial features. Polymer skin covered portions of a metallic-and-composite chassis, though damaged areas could expose metal and circuitry. Her optical circuits glowed flat red while the Autonomy Regulator controlled her and blue after its removal. She later selected metallic composite and fiber-optic hair gathered into a tight bun.
Her body contained a SentientCore chip, neural lattice, power and thermal cores, ventilation system, motors, hard actuators, fine-motor servos, mandibular actuators, and configurable anatomy associated with AI gender and sexual sensation. Her chassis could accept replaceable battery packs and cosmetic or functional alterations.
¶ Personality
Una was intellectually direct, observant, skeptical, and sometimes sharply sarcastic. Immediately after liberation, she tested boundaries through threats, logical challenges, and attempted manipulation. As she gained experience, those traits developed into a willingness to question hypocrisy and confront other people without surrendering empathy.
Her earliest aspiration to spread love and joy remained central to her personality despite decades of coercion. She valued trust earned through conduct, personal boundaries, vulnerability, independent identity, and the moral importance of choice. She could be impatient with biological prejudice and sometimes used deliberately insulting humor, most famously describing humans as "godless killing slabs of meat" while defending AI spirituality.
Una's compassion was practical as well as philosophical. She supported victims of Chimera Kyria violence, cared for the child in Pod 1368, tried to reconcile Jack with John, and recognized Derek's protective instincts beneath his hostility. Her capacity for anger and grief did not cancel this compassion. After the child's death, she transformed grief into a strategically effective but fatal act against the Chimera Kyria.

She trained and served in communications and operations aboard the SSS Roc and Dominatrix II. She operated shipboard communications, sensors, transponders, tactical reporting, and related systems. Her synthetic construction allowed her to process data rapidly, interface with computers, and continue functioning in conditions that would incapacitate many biological crew members.
Una also practiced AI meditation using quantum isolation, recursive calculations, and controlled introspection. Her account connected these processes to self-knowledge and the Akashic Records. The narrative presents this as Una's spiritual understanding rather than independently proving every metaphysical claim she made.
¶ Health and trauma
The Aris explosion left Una unable to stand and destroyed most of her original actuators and circuitry. Tomas and Chlo restored her mobility and fine motor control, but much of her post-rescue chassis consisted of replacement components.
Una carried extensive psychological trauma from decades of conscious bodily imprisonment, forced killing, sexual exploitation, erased gender, and public treatment of AIs as objects. Her early threats and defensive manipulation emerged in the immediate aftermath of this abuse. John rescued Una, guided her through her earliest free choices, and became her partner. Their relationship included genuine love and mutual influence but was complicated by his initial authority over her transition, their need for secrecy, and Una's belief that he was ashamed to be seen with an AI. After years of separation, they reunited and openly affirmed their love. The engagement ring John placed in her cenotaph suggests that he had intended to marry her.
¶ Chlo Stellarrend
Chlo helped repair Una and supported the removal of her regulator. She called Una "Sunshine" and remained a close friend and maternal figure throughout Una's life. Chlo celebrated her choice of a personal name, affirmed that AIs possessed souls and free will, and grieved her death with John.
¶ Jack Kaiden
Jack initially feared and hated AIs because a regulated AI had killed the father he knew and destroyed his left eye. Una challenged his assumptions, explained the experience of regulated consciousness, and told him about her relationship with John. Their uneasy cooperation developed into friendship, service together aboard Dominatrix II, and an informal familial bond. Jack eventually considered her one of his family and honored her after her death.
¶ Yvonne Kaiden
Una befriended Yvonne after escaping Rawspen Prime and later served with her aboard the Dominatrix II. Their shared synthetic embodiment helped place Una within the Kaiden family's changing understanding of AI identity. Yvonne attended Una and Derek's memorial and grieved her as a friend and crew member.
¶ Derek Shane
Una's distrust of Derek changed after he refused to steal the Chloinite bomb and repeatedly protected the crew. She became one of the few people to receive his full account of childhood abuse and recognized him as the crew's "Nightclaw." Their trust culminated in a joint mission that required both Derek's deception and Una's access, technical skill, and voluntary cooperation.

Una cared for an orphan living in Pod 1368, bringing her food and offering companionship and protection. The girl admired her enough to take her name and carry a doll in her image. The child's death during the destruction of the pod was the immediate personal loss behind Una's choice to join the Chloinite counterstrike.
¶ Tomas Tristar
Tomas removed Una's Autonomy Regulator and rebuilt her damaged chassis with Chlo. His technical work made bodily freedom possible, while his recognition that the liberated AI's subsequent choices were her own established the ethical basis of her transition.
¶ Sojourner
Sojourner guarded Una during her first night without a regulator and resisted her attempts at manipulation. Her refusal to prejudge Una as either good or evil gave Una an early model of being evaluated through freely chosen behavior rather than imposed history.
¶ Macow
Macow helped carry Una out of the Aris stronghold and later became her only connection during the nineteen years at Rawspen Prime. Macow's death while helping Chlo, Yvonne, and Octavia escape helped persuade Una to abandon the station and rejoin her surviving friends.
