Derek Shane is an underworld operative contacted by Kroven Vaskyr during Jack Kaiden's search for his father. Dangerous, opportunistic, and capable under fire, Derek becomes an uneasy ally aboard Dominatrix II.
¶ Recruitment
The crew intercepts Derek while a Quelos vessel is pursuing him. After being brought aboard, he attacks Talonor Kaiden with his leg knife, Nightclaw, during security checks. The blade changes color in Talonor's grasp, suggesting that it responds to its holder.
Derek claims he can help locate John Kaiden but initially demands Talonorium as payment. He later becomes embedded in the crew's operations despite continuing suspicion about his motives.
¶ Mord Souq and the Bomb
Derek takes control during the Mord Souq confrontation and ejects Mord without due process. The killing is later recognized as an execution outside military protocol.
During the later conflict with Skyler Novastar, Derek negotiates over a bomb and attempts to redirect Chimera Kyria forces. His actions combine betrayal, improvisation, and an effort to protect the people with whom he has served.
