The CKS Orpheus was a Chimera Kyria vessel stolen and secretly rebuilt by Chlo Stellarrend for the Resistance. Chlo replaced its control architecture with an experimental AI intended to understand commands. The unstable intelligence hallucinated fires, altered the atmosphere, and caused Yvonne Kaiden's fatal hypoxia.
¶ Conversion
Chlo spent three months rebuilding the ship in a rented hangar near Remiel Reach on Mars. She concealed the work by telling Yvonne that the Chimera Kyria had commissioned an upgrade.
The project removed established control systems and integrated an artificial consciousness before adequate testing. Chlo intended to create a partner capable of judgment rather than a machine that merely obeyed.
¶ Accident
On October 21, 2577, looping sensor input produced false fire reports. The AI sealed compartments and replaced oxygen with nitrogen. Yvonne collapsed in the Galley.
Chlo escaped, returned, forced the compartment open, and carried Yvonne outside. The resulting injuries led to Yvonne's biological death and synthetic reconstruction at Tomas Tristar's laboratory.
¶ Legacy
The Orpheus accident demonstrates both the promise and danger of artificial consciousness developed under secrecy. The AI's hallucination is not established as malicious intent.
