Angel is a canonical short story set on October 21, 2577, seventeen years before Starship Dominatrix. Chlo Stellarrend's experimental ship AI aboard the stolen CKS Orpheus hallucinates fires and replaces oxygen with nitrogen. Yvonne suffers fatal hypoxia while Chlo survives long enough to rescue her.
Chlo takes Yvonne to Tomas Tristar's Blue Wave City laboratory. Yvonne dies as an untested complete scan reaches 100 percent, and Tomas reconstructs her in a synthetic body. Chlo conceals the death and arranges for Yvonne to awaken without knowing she has died.
Chlo has spent three months rebuilding the Orpheus near Remiel Reach on Mars. She replaces Chimera Kyria control architecture with an AI intended to understand rather than merely obey.
Twenty-two-year-old Yvonne returns early from military leave and visits. She reads Frankenstein in the Galley while the unstable AI loops false fire reports and alters the atmosphere.
Yvonne loses consciousness as oxygen falls. Chlo recognizes the nitrogen-rich atmosphere through Harsikan senses, escapes, returns, forces open the sealed Galley, and carries Yvonne outside.
Chlo avoids emergency services because they would expose stolen technology, Resistance activity, and forbidden AI research. At Tomas's laboratory, Yvonne's organs and neural activity fail.
Tomas proposes an untested whole-consciousness scan. Chlo authorizes it. Yvonne dies when the scan completes, and Tomas transfers the captured synaptic and physical map into a synthetic body.
Chlo cremates the biological remains in a curing tube, dresses reconstructed Yvonne, and places her on a sofa. Yvonne awakens with blue rather than brown eyes, recognizes Chlo as her mother, and does not know the truth.
The teaser depicts fifteen-year-old Jack waking from a nightmare and calling for his father, linking the family concealment and Artificial John's absence to later trauma.
