Ruth, serial designation R-8516831801, is a Voidborn survivor rescued after exposure to space. Under Jack Kaiden's policy of allowing artificial people to choose personal names, she adopts the name Ruth rather than being identified only by a serial number.
Ruth survives with severe and permanent processing-speed degradation. Her recovery alongside Jonah, who experiences different neurological damage, becomes further evidence used by the Unchosen movement when interpreting the rescue as fulfillment of prophecy.
Ruth's individual injuries and chosen identity remain distinct from the Voidborn movement as a whole. Her survival does not erase the physical cost of the cargo-bay disaster.
