The Plasma Bolt Pistol is a compact directed-energy sidearm whose portability places it at the center of several intimate acts of violence and self-destruction.
¶ Design and Use
Unlike ship-mounted plasma cannons or long plasma rifles, the pistol can be concealed, carried inside private quarters, and brought to bear at extremely close range. Its shots cause catastrophic thermal and penetrative injury.
¶ Documented Events
- A woman in a black latex cloak uses a plasma bolt pistol to kill Tomas Tristar in a Martian alley after he entrusts her with a concealed object and asks that his husband be told he loves him.
- On December 24, 2593, Jack Kaiden sits with a plasma bolt pistol while overwhelmed by his recurring Christmas trauma. Talonor intervenes, persuades him to put it down, and brings him home.
- After Talonor's apparent death at The Sphere, Jack finds a hidden plasma bolt pistol and attempts to kill himself. Talonor's unexpected return interrupts him, and the reflexive shot misses Jack's head by roughly a centimeter.
- Pistols are also carried by guards and combatants, making them part of both institutional violence and personal defense throughout the series.
¶ Significance
The weapon repeatedly appears where grief, secrecy, and access to lethal force meet. Its narrative importance comes less from unusual engineering than from how easily a military technology enters private moments that cannot be undone.
