Onyx is Colonel Starling's trusted adviser and a psionic capable of influencing another person's actions.
During the crisis aboard the Australis, Onyx accompanies Starling and Kroven Vaskyr toward the docking bay. When Kroven must choose between the bounty arrangement and rescuing Pailisto, Onyx attempts to control him. Kroven recognizes that the choice is being manipulated.
Andryanos intervenes psionically so Kroven can decide for himself. The struggle causes Onyx's nose to bleed blue, and Andryanos ultimately hurls debris at him. Onyx's role in the confrontation is coercive: he is not merely advising Starling but attempting to remove Kroven's agency.
