A temporal anomaly is a region where ordinary chronology and spacetime become unstable. The Dominatrix's encounter with one allows a catastrophic future, a younger crew, and multiple instances of Jack and Mistress to affect one another.
Evidence obtained inside the anomaly is real to the people who experience it, but it does not automatically describe the final timeline. Choices made after contact can avert deaths, alter causal chains, or create duplicated instances with overlapping memories.
The anomaly is therefore central to the distinction among Old Jack, Present-Day Jack, New Jack, and the continuing Jack. Shared memory does not collapse those identities into a single uncomplicated person.
