Octavia takes the surname Kaiden through her marriage to Yvonne. The chronology establishes that they meet approximately fourteen years before Yvonne's synthetic identity is revealed in 2594.
¶ Early Life and Military Service
Octavia attends military piloting school with Kroven. She ranks thirty-fifth and fails a pre-flight check during her final assessed flight. Kroven later uses the ranking to insult her, while Octavia treats his behavior with limited patience despite valuing ordinary courtesy.
Octavia becomes a military pilot. She meets Yvonne Kaiden during their service, and the two women begin a romantic relationship. Octavia remembers kissing Yvonne in the rain on Flit and retains photographs and other mementos of their life together.
Two of Octavia's friends die in battle on Yvonne's twenty-fifth birthday. She preserves their photographs among her personal belongings, connecting her military history to grief that remains present long after her active service.

Octavia continues serving beside Yvonne after President John Kaiden appoints Yvonne AI ambassador. Their marriage therefore spans private family life, starship command, synthetic civil-rights politics, and the unresolved legal status of Yvonne's personhood.
¶ Apotheosis
When Yvonne is accused of transmitting protected information and committing perjury, Octavia waits aboard Dominatrix II for news. She rejects the assumption that being the president's daughter guarantees Yvonne's safety and warns that harm could simply be classified rather than prevented.
Octavia learns that X3 coerced Jack into using Code 73 and implanting the transmitter in Yvonne. She is told that Jack acted under X3's command and later brings Jack to the Cargo Bay temple, where she witnesses his exhausted acquiescence to the Voidborn occupation.
Chlo admits that she created Code 73 as a supposed protective measure and blames herself for vulnerabilities affecting both Yvonne and Jack. Octavia distinguishes the systems Chlo built from X3's exploitation of them. She refuses to treat Yvonne's construction as the source of Yvonne's strength, affirming that her strength comes from who she is.
This defense of Chlo does not undo Octavia's own participation in the earlier concealment. It instead reflects her consistent belief that a person's moral identity cannot be reduced to the technology another actor exploits.
